Exterior Car Care Tips for Auto-Rookies

If you are owning a car for the first time, then there is a lot you need to know if you wish to take good care of the ride like a responsible vehicle owner. While there are many important aspects to a vehicle, its exterior is without doubt one of the biggest and let’s face it, nobody would want to drive a car that doesn’t look good. Here are a few useful tips that will help you give the exterior of your automobile the best care like a pro.

Washing and Drying

This may sound a little too obvious but washing your ride, as simple as it is, is one of the best ways in which you can keep the outer surface clean and remove the harmful substances that can cause damage. It is most advisable to do this in the morning or the evening when the sun isn’t shining all too bright, or you can select a shady spot that works. Let the car cool down for a bit if it was out in the sun for a long time and grab your hose and sponge and start washing. Use the adequate amount of a mild car-cleaning solution that will not damage the paint surface and make sure you thoroughly clean the entire body.

Once you are done washing, the next step is drying, which is equally important. Without proper drying, the body will create water spots, which is the result of water droplets drying up by themselves, mainly because of sun’s heat. You can use any clean cloth for this job, but ideally, a microfiber cloth that you keep specifically for drying your automobile will help get the best possible job done. Chamois are another substitute, which is basically a leather cloth that has a much higher absorbability compared to other cloths.

Apply Protectants

You ride needs an added level of safety against the many potentially harmful elements of the outside world which includes sunlight, dust, bird dropping, rock chips and so much more. A protective coat that can be applied over the body in the form of vinyl and rubber or ceramic will give it the protection it needs to take on any road in any weather. Apply the substance on the body and make sure you effectively cover all parts. Once done, leave it on for a few minutes and let it dry off. Once dry, you can wipe down the parts with a new cloth that is clean and dry. You can either perform this application by yourself or contract the job to a trained professional who will do it even better.

Waxing

This is another great way of shielding the surface against external elements and giving your ride that new-car look and feel. Usually these products come as liquid, paste or cream and there are so many options in the market for you to choose from. An applicator pad must be used for the application of the material on the vehicle and these will either be provided along with the wax, or you can purchase it separately. Application must be done one panel at a time and always follow a circular motion in a uniform direction. Once dry, using a clean cloth, wipe it down to bring out that new-car lustre.
